Abstract

Extended reality, an umbrella term that encompasses virtual reality, mixed reality and augmented reality, is projected as a medium with enormous potential for representing information and generating content with a high degree of interaction. It is precisely this potential that defines its category as a medium and the features that constitute it as a medium of complex construction due to its potential levels of interaction and representation through its analogy with the phenomenon of physical reality itself. Based on a review of the literature and an analysis of features such as presence, immersion and agency in several cases, the characteristics and projection of the medium are structured based on its potential evolution, as technology also advances and consolidates. It also describes the limitations existing in the current context in relation to the medium and the diversity of levels and formats in the representation of information and in the mechanisms of interaction with the virtual medium.
