Abstract

The main objective of this study is to analyze how journalistic media outlets in Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia select content for the panels displayed on Google News Showcase. From this general objective, two specific goals emerge: 1) to understand the editorial process being used on the Showcase platform, and 2) to identify the specific negotiations with Google regarding content editing for this platform. The methodological design is based on a qualitative approach, drawing from online interviews with 16 media managers across the three Latin American countries, conducted between March and June 2023. The main results indicate that curation is not a purely journalistic process, but rather a hybrid shaped by contractual pressures and performance metrics. Regarding selection, priority is given to "soft" news with high potential for being picked up by Showcase over political or international issues, with the goal of gaining space on Google Discover. Although the results of this research point to advancements regarding this platform and discuss the tensions surrounding the platformization of journalism, it is considered relevant to continue with further studies that include a larger number of media outlets to evaluate other aspects of Showcase.
