The discursive representation of ageism in narratives of older people
Active Life Centers as relational spaces in the city

This study analyzes the frames of ageism in the narratives of people over 65 and explores the relational and welfare role of Active Life Centers in the city. A qualitative and exploratory methodology was applied, which included seven discussion groups with older adults who are regular users of senior center in their city and several semi-structured interviews with the managers of these centers, with the aim of combining personal testimony with professional experience. Participants acknowledge suffering occasional but recurring mistreatment through interactions marked by indifference or contempt in their relationship with institutions. Their narratives refute many of the stereotypes of ageism by showing continuous daily activity, a clear enthusiasm for learning, and a desire to socialize that they are able to develop thanks to the neighborhood Active Life Center. Managers confirm the key role of these spaces in establishing support networks and strengthening the sense of belonging. With this research, we contribute to the WHO's call for scientific evidence to inform future strategies to prevent and combat ageism.
