Abstract

Since the Vienna Conference (1982) where the concept of active ageing was introduced, various social changes have made it necessary to review its scope. At the same time, its consideration has been permeating the agenda of Spanish public administrations and transnational organisations, reflected in the successive publication of reference documents that have emphasised its definition and implications.

In the scientific and institutional literature that has dealt with the introduction of the concept of active ageing in Spain, there are few studies that summarise the concrete actions planned and implemented by the autonomous and/or state bodies. Given the conditions and needs of the elderly population in a context of technological change, the adoption of new technologies and access to and use of the Internet are influential factors in a renewed debate on the concept of active ageing, linked to aspects such as health control and lifestyle.

The aim of this paper is to shed light on the orientation of practises and programmes for the dissemination and promotion of active ageing throughout Spain and to draw up an inventory of actions that will serve as a basis for future research in this area of public policy.
