Coming from Afar: Key Elements in the Construction of the Narrative on the Migratory Crisis in the Canary Islands in the Press Cartoons of Morgan and Padylla (2020–2024)

This study analyzes the discourse presented by Morgan (Canarias7) and Padylla (El Día/La Provincia), the only two cartoonists currently publishing in the Canarian press, regarding the migration crisis affecting the Archipelago since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis covers the period from 2020 to 2024 and employs a methodology that combines framing theory with multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA). The purpose of this hybrid approach is to create cognitive frames that allow for a comparative assessment between other news events and the subject of this article, as well as to identify a series of recurring patterns in the sample (composed of 360 editorial cartoons), which were subsequently analyzed. The application of this methodology has revealed numerous similarities in the journalistic narrative of both cartoonists, showing that they aim to raise awareness and denounce the humanitarian catastrophe underlying the migration phenomenon. The main difference lies in the fact that while Morgan more frequently uses visual metaphors, Padylla sharply criticizes the political class. This research is part of a knowledge transfer project entitled Viñetas & Fronteras.
