Diagnosis of professional performance in Nursing Care for Critically Ill Patient

Nursing care for critically ill patients requires scientific, humanistic, and technical competencies to ensure quality care. The objective of the study was to characterize a situational diagnosis of nursing professional performance in the critical care areas of IESS Ceibos Hospital, in order to obtain evidence that reflects the current reality of clinical practice. The research was mixed, exploratory, descriptive, and cross-sectional, conducted between March and June 2025. A survey was administered to 40 nursing professionals, along with direct observation and documentary review of 40 medical record, in addition to interviews with 3 administrators. The results showed a predominance of female staff (87.5%), with personnel having broad experience in the area; however, 35% had not received training updates in the last two years. Strengths were identified in technical competencies, adherence to protocols, and communication. Weaknesses were noted in feedback on performance evaluation results, management of occupational stress, and complete and timely documentation in medical records. It is concluded that the professional performance of nursing staff is adequate; nevertheless, the implementation of strategies aimed at strengthening professional development and continuous training is recommended in order to overcome the identified weaknesses.
