Abstract

This systematic review examines the academic literature on immersive journalism with 360° video, with the aim of identifying the predominant methodological approaches, evaluating their main strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and analyzing the challenges and most effective strategies for their implementation in the journalistic field. We included open access, peer-reviewed empirical studies published between 2017 and 2024 in English or Spanish, specifically focusing on the informative use of 360° video. Searches were carried out in Web of Science (core collection) and Scopus. Methodological quality was evaluated using the MMAT tool (2018), and the findings were synthesized using deductive-inductive thematic analysis. The ten studies selected had a mainly qualitative design. The results highlight the potential of the format to foster user immersion and empathy, but also identify technical, narrative, and organizational limitations. The opportunities are related to expressive innovation and the transformation of professional profiles, while the threats refer to technological barriers and ethical dilemmas. Some research proposes good practices, although the available evidence is still limited and heterogeneous. The review has been registered in OSF, has not received funding, and no conflicts of interest are declared.
