Abstract

The generation of scientific knowledge is one of the institutions of higher education (IHE) missionary objectives, being the present, a determining element of its contribution to the transformation of society. This article aims to establish the effect of managerial leadership, which is often academic in the knowledge management. In the exploratory research, quantitative methods are used to analyze data from the survey of 272 directors from different Colombian IHE. The main result was a positive relationship between leadership and knowledge management and between some types of leadership, such as transactional and laissez-faire in the dimensions of knowledge storage and knowledge transfer. Regarding transformational leadership, no effect is found on any of the dimensions. In the discussion from the literature, the above can be explained by the type of organization; in some universities in their mission, they define the generation of knowledge, which is above the manager is on duty. Findings are essential because they allow identifying the type of leadership to improve knowledge management dimensions from universities.
