Abstract

We performed an empirical approach to two manners whereby readers/ users interact with online newspapers: letters to the director and comments. Through in depth interviews to professionals from El País and La Vanguardia, we focus on how these online newspapers approach and manage both forms of participation. In addition, we identified the most commented news published in the front page of these outlets, every day the fifteen days between May 15 and 29, 2019; period which covers the days immediately before and after of Spanish regional elections held on 26 May 2019. From the interviews, we obtained that the newspapers receive every day more comments, especially in news related to actions and to decisions of politicians. Comments are evaluated, so in El País and in La Vanguardia, there are professionals dedicated to evaluate them but these newspapers also use computer programs that filter comments through the location of certain words. Regarding the possible contribution of comments to the journalistic activity, while the interviewee from El País considers comments do not influence the journalistic content, although they contribute to generate debate; the interviewee from La Vanguardia expresses that sometimes the newspaper contacts users who provide valuable comments to obtain more information. The 1000 comments received daily by El País and the 90 letters to the director that arrive daily to La Vanguardia shows an interest of citizens in publicly expressing their perceptions and opinions. The analysis of the most commented news published in the front cover of the two newspapers from May 15 to May 29, 2019; demonstrates that more commented news are focused on politics, being the most commented news of El País “La Mesa del Congress postpones the decision on the deputies imprisoned with the opposition of PP and Cs”, with 3814 comments and being the most commented news in La Vanguardia, “The Prosecutor's Office asks to prosecute high positions of the Government and TV3 for 1-O by criminal organization”, which received a total of 7000 comments.
